History of Bingo: The history of bingo began in the 16th century with a national lottery that was invented in Italy. It was called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto” and was held among the people of that country every week. In the 16th century, numbers were drawn randomly from a drum, making the game almost identical to the modern game of bingo.
18th century: France: Le Lotto, a favorite game of aristocrats, emerged in 1778 from an earlier Italian version of bingo. The game used special cards consisting of three horizontal lines and nine vertical columns. Numbers were randomly selected from a wooden drum during the game. The player who was the first to cover all the numbers on their card was declared the winner. Educational games based on Bingo appeared in Germany and other countries.
19th century – Germany: The French borrowed bingo from the Germans, and the Germans invented the educational game in 1880 to help children learn to read and count faster. The cards consisted of letters or numbers, and the lottery organizer drew these numbers or letters in random order. Whoever got a certain word or amount first was the winner.
In the 1900s, Edwin Lowe, a bankrupt toy factory owner, noticed a group of Italians playing bingo at a fair. Lowe changed the ground rules and began selling the games. Carl Leffler, a math professor, created cards. He created 6,000 unique cards, which, according to one theory, caused him to lose his mind. Nevertheless, the game quickly became very popular.
